Welcome to my personal journey of culinary exploration
We all have our own natural talents and aptitudes. In spite of my best scholarly efforts, I learned over the years that I cannot sing, play a piano or a trumpet, draw so much as a straight line, act on stage, and I have no talent for woodworking, painting or sculpting. My only artistic, creative aptitudes seem to be writing and cooking. So, it seemed logical that I contrived an online recipe book, which I began in 2009 on a platform that was eventually bought out by Google. I migrated to Squarespace in 2024.
I will always try to give credit to the culinarians whose recipes inspire me. I have to thank my mother for sparking my interest in cooking with her often adventuresome dabbling in the culinary arts, self-taught from more than a hundred recipe books collected over a forty year period after WWII, all of which I inherited.
And, a nod to my father as well. He loved to eat; was an accomplished barbecue pit master who taught me how to cook with smoke and fire, and he bequeathed me his mother’s Griswold cast iron cookware containing the patina of more than a thousand meals spanning a century. And perhaps more than any other person, my dad recognized I had a talent for writing and gave me a lot of encouragement in my formative years.
Mostly, however, I will give credit to My Number One Fan. She is well connected to the current food blog-o-sphere and constantly brings me recipe ideas from the many bloggers she follows. She has always been there to support my culinary pursuits, if not with words of kindness and encouragement to back-off the pepper, then with always ensuring we have a well stocked pantry so I can go about the business of creating something delicious for dinner on any given night. She is also my editor-in-chief.
Finally, my family. Our current practice is a Tuesday night, multi-generational gathering central to the dinner table, where my Number One Fan and I share many a recipe from Kitchen Tapestry, plus a few new ones. I am grateful for their willingness to play guinea pig to my culinary trials (and occasional error).
Welcome to a foodie’s personal journey of culinary experimentation, and a collection of recipes that I hope you will enjoy reading as much as I have had creating and writing them.
Meet my online alter-ego, Major Walloughby. He’s a far more interesting bloke to look at than I am, but we both wear glasses, have an absurdly large necktie collection and appreciate the art, precision and joy behind an expertly crafted, artistically presented martini.
